Assignment 7: A report

To: University Director
From: Katia carrasco
Date: December 1st, 2009
Subject: Ideas about common room

The purpose of this report is writen to analyse the location and advantages of having a common room to us at the University. As an advice, I will suggest you to choose a big room since we are a lot of students to be fitted in it.

I would recommend you a clear space with a lot of light so It would be very nice to spend our free time there, listening to the music, chatting with our friends, having a cup of tea or coffee when the weather turns bad.

I would prefer a room looking at a green area like near the main garden because the green areas relax any stressful atmosphere after a difficult oral presentation or exam. Another important point is painting the chosen room white, in that way It would look clean and spacious, the upmost important detail is to buy a microwave oven to heat our food and an electric kettle to put on when it is cold.

It is a fact that you will prepare the room taking into consideration my suggestions and If you need any help please do not hesitate to ask me a hand.

Yours faithfully,

katia carrasco

Crime and Environment review (November 18, 2009)

The most relevant concern about crimes is to learn fighting and preventing them to happen. In my opinion, we have to be aware of different types of crimes like: fraud, elderly abuse, white collar crimes that are the most popular ones for me. Apart from pickpocketing and mugging. I have been investigating on the net about fraud, concerning identity fraud or credit card fraud, so to prevent this we have to be cautious when using a credit card or withdrawing cash from a bank machine, looking around and being suspicious of any weird or strange uncommon sign.

Assignment 6: Formal Transactional Letter.

Dear Editor,

Iam katia carrasco, an active member of an environmental group and I have some complaints about last Monday´s demonstration newspaper report which is almost nothing correct in relation to what I saw there.

Firstly, apart from the protesters claim about the extinction of a rare species of snail, they protested against the destruction of woodland in Oldbury. Secondly, they were over 2,000 people gathered there instead of 200 people as you said in your newspaper report.

To make matters worse, it was a silent demonstration and not a a noisy one as you wrote in your report and the troublemakers were not just unemployed youngsters though many of them were local residents protesting against the building of a by-pass for Oldbury.

I would like you to take my points under consideration and I expect you to send a reporter to interview me so as to mend this newspaper report.

Yours faithfully,

katia carrasco

My experience about weather or natural disaster

Iam going to describe a situation that I went through long time ago, but when Iam trying to retell this event I feel that strange and weird feeling again "that we are so fragil since we are made of blood and flesh", so today Iam not taking any risk like swimming in the sea up to behind the waves break, this was a terrifying experience because I couldn´t get to the sea shore until three hours after being stucked in that brave or rough sea. From that day on I have learnt to take care of myself as a human being.....Nowdays when I go to the sea Iam only sunbathing or playing basketball with some friends.

Assignment 5 October 27, 2009

Why is it important for ordinary people to help in the fight against crime?

As it is mentioned in the former question. Fighting against crime is a duty that involves all the ordinary citizens in a given community. Crime in a community is a real and prevalent problem in today´s society so we have to learn how to fight against this, so to do this, we have to keep an eye out for anything unusual and suspicious happening in our neighborhood and let the police know about this weird events so they will keep watch on our neighborhood. At the same time we need to organize in our community a suerveillance team formed by neighbors around the area. If you are parents you need to make sure you always know where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing in order to protect them from any trouble. At home you can get burglar alarms, cctv devices, taking care to secure your home all day long. When women have to walk home alone at nights they can buy a personal alarm to carry with them if they don´t drive or if they can´t get a taxi, but the most impoortant thing is to watch their surroundings when walking along the street. Please don´t use your cell phone, credit cards or take your money out of your purse because shoplifters are wherever you go, don´t appeal their attention using them in public places.

2 Writing Task-Mid Term Exam

Number 6 "You recently visited a place which you had not been to for a long time"

Dear Claudia,

I am so sorry because I haven`t writen to you for a long time. Please accept my apologies for that I didn´t mean to hurt your feelings having such a behaviour but my life here in Chile has changed a lot since our father´s death. Hope the kids are all right living in Paris at the moment.

Claudia This letter is to let you know what a beautiful lanscape there is in Talagante, near our farm that is in Isla de Maipo. Do you remember when we were little girls we used to pick up all kinds of fruits and vegetables just for fun. Guess what!!! the horses we had there are not only two now, It is full of riding horses who were free in that green and flowery land.
The house we had there It has been rebuilt again, and you can´t imagine what peculiar and picturesque is looking at that medium size house. The most amazing of all is that around the house there are thousands of different kinds of bushes and flowers.
You should come to visit this memorable place once again since our mother have put it on sale. You know that I don´t agree with that decision but we don´t have any other choice to cope with the expenses to maintain the farm.
Claudia I have to leave you now, send hugs and kisses for my nephews, see you and lots of love,
Best wishes,
Katie (your beloved sister)

Mid-Term Writing Task "Formal Letter" Oct. 8, 2009

Dear Madam,
It was such a relief when I received your letter, saying that I have won two weeks at Camp California in U.S.A. I have never been to that beautiful place at Camp California. It is great fun to have the opportunity to stay in there and the most remarkable of all It is that most of the expenses are made for your company since It is a prize.
Firstly, I would like to know if you have all the Camp facilities to stay in my tent because I love being in contact with nature. Then, I would prefer travelling in July because here in New York is summer time so I am very busy with my language teaching job I have till the end of this month.
I have great experience dealing with young people in certain activities such as singing and swimming. I have also taken piano lessons together with singing classes but the activity I like the most is swimming because It is very relaxing for me to swim in pools, lakes, rivers and so on.
I need you to tell me what the weather conditions are to bring some appropriate clothes and How much money I am going to earn working there. If you need any further information about me please do not hesitate in asking me.
I am looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Katia Carrasco

September 15, 2009. "Chain Stories"

As I carefully entered the haunted house, the door shut behind me and I started to feel that I was in an unknown situation which was terrifying me in such a way I couldn't explain to anybody there in that horrendous day I had there. It was a heavy atmosphere so I was not breathing properly but I had the need of going to the bathroom that was upstairs. As I rushed through the stairs I saw two ghosts behind me so they began calling my name, luodly:

-Are you katie? I bet you are!!!

-No, I' m not so I said to them I'am katia...You have been mistaken me for another person............

At that precise moment, the ghost sang an ancient song and I recognized the melody straight away and without realizing it I hummed the tune. I was hearing it very pleased...

Wednesday, September 2009 "Writing Assignment 3 : Composition

I strongly believe that the best way to travel in Santiago(capital city of Chile) is by underground, because you spend few time to arrive to your destination point, when it is not peak hour which means a lot of traffic jumps when all the citizens use the same vehicle of trasportation to get anywhere they want to.

Firstly, It is clean, fast, comfortable, you can do other activities while you are travelling in it, like reading a magazine or a newspaper, talking on the cel phone, knitting a new sweater, listening to the music, studying for a coming test. As a result, you save time using this transport so then you can organize a given day with different activities as, going for a walk with a friend, clubbing, going to the cinema or do errands you did not have time to do when using another transport except the underground (metro for chileans).

Another benefit is that does not pollute the city, so we are not having a bad air to breathe deeply. It covers large distances from the top to the bottom of Santiago, and in every subway station you have mini buses to connect to get to further places within an area.

Finally, the chilean goverment is investing a lot of money in order to improve the metro in Santiago, and they are building new lines and modern metro stations where old and phisically handicapped people can use the subway in the capital city without any problem for them because some stations have lifts and mechanic stairs to make easier its use.

Travel "Positive and Negative Effects of Tourism"

"Positive and Negative Effects of Tourism"

Tourism is a very nice area where you can work on a free schedule, at the same time you get to know different cultures and people which can make you improve your oral skills in English Language but the most important about this activity is the advantage of travelling at the lowest fare.
When Tourists come over Santiago(capital city) most of the time they are easily recognized because they are carrying digital cameras wherever they go but what surprises me is the fact of an increasing pollution, rubbish, lots of traffic jumps, and long queues in the shops or restaurants they stop by.
The positive aspect is that they spend money here, lodging in hotels and renting cars so It improves our economy.
  • Yes; I do agree with the writer's opinion, I think of it as a nonsense when you go to far away pace and you are back in less than two weeks becuase you do not really know the culture, customs, language and people itself, It is a fake travel since It is not real.

"The city of Slights"

1.- What place had she wanted to see in Europe?

2.- What is her opinion about the metro in Paris?

3.- Where did they accomodate in Paris?

4.- What were her children doing on the Eiffel' s Tower Top?

5.- What kind of building is "The Sacre Coeur?

Comparing the two places in this blog I would rather prefer to go to Paris (The city of Slights) instead of going to Belize and exploring caves in there. Firstly, I' am not good at experimenting adventurous trips because It involves different types of risks that I don`t want to take. Thus, I would be pretty happy staying in Paris, which is a lively and cultural city where some artists show their art works.

WRITTING Assignment 2 "The advantages and disadvantages of living in the city or countryside"

I am going to start pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city or countryside. One of the major advantages of living in the city are the number of jobs available and the commute to those jobs together with the convenience of public transportation because the citizens have better transport facilities than the people in the countryside have. Villagers need to drive a car to get some canned food because shops are far away from their homes but they always get fresh vegetables and fresh fruits.

Living in the city is fun because there is always something of excitement going on and there are many places in which you can meet with your friends. However, in the countryside you have more friends since It is small, they live in unity and peace and the air is fresh, full of geen hills so the scenery is so calm and beautiful though in the city it is noisy and busy, leading to a bit of stress.

Therefore when you live in the city you keep up with new developments in your profession as well as there are more opportunities for people to progress in their lives and they have more chances for making money.

Coosing where to live depends on your personal preferences, status in life, marital status, and your goals in life.

UNIT 7 TOPIC ACTIVITIES Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Do you prefer living in the city or country?

I am a city mouse so I do prefer living in the city because I was born in the city town so It is by custom to like a crowded city where everybody is in a hurry. The good thing about it is that I have lot more opportunities living here, concernig health, work, entartainment, choosing among a variety of different places without looking at the same people wherever I go.

Assignment 1: Letter of Complaint (Thursday, August 13, 2009)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about my shopping trip to Boulogne an nearby hypermarket which was a complete disaster because everything indicated in your brochure was not what was given to anyone on the tour.
On the one hand, we were only two hours in the hypermarket and the time was not enough to buy all the items we wanted due the crowds who were that day there, and we had to join long queues at checkouts..what was very unpleasant for me. Then, we spent just one hour in Boulogne and It did not give us time to eat in those charming restaurants because they were closed eventhough we did not visit the antique shops in which I was very interested to know.
To make matters worse, the conditions which we found ourselves in the coach were first of all unprofessional and the quality of it was disgusting, the toilet was filthy upon boarding it and the air conditioning was not working properly so it was so hot and on top of this there were not cold drinks at all.
As you see, I am very disappointed with the shopping trip and I am asking for at the very least a full refund so not even the arrival time was respected by Brighton Marina Coaches.
Yours fathfully
k. Carrasco

A day of quizzes August 11, 2009

I think of being a shopaholic is a major problem because they often buy unnecesary things, items or gadgets without existing a basic need to get them so in my opinion they do this action of buying unconsciously, if my advice will be of any help I ´ll tell them do not go window-shopping, do another activity instead of that one and if you go out...leave your credit cards, money and others at home so you are not getting into debt again.
1.- Everything the fortuneteller predicted came true.
2.- If I put on weight one of my buttons will come off.
3.- My birthday is coming up soon.
4.- I am not coming up with any new idea.

DESCRIPTIONS July 1, 2009

Two years ago I made up my mind and I took a bus to go to Mendoza (a city that is located in argentina, and It is very close to Santiago) and I went there to buy clothes and eat juicy argentinean steaks with chips. Once there, on Saturday moorning I went to a famous shoeshop and I met a middle age woman who had the same shoe size as me.

She was like competing against me trying on all the shoes I had left behind. I remenbered her crystal clear because she was wearing close-fitting clothes, her most striking feature was her tall that impressed everybody in there. She had blue almond - shaped eyes, her hair was shoulder length and straight. It was fun to look at her exppressive and pale complexion face when she didn´t give up a red pair of boots without a struggle against me.

Nowadays, we became close friends but I could never thought It could happen. We do a lot of activities together unless when It comes the time to go window shopping ........

Letter of Application (June 17 Assignment)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express an interest in the position you are offering so I woul like to apply for the job of Bar and Restaurant Staff advertised in this week´s issue of "The Sun".

As you will see from my curriculum vitae I have a grat deal of experience related to restaurant staff. Therefore, I am expert on clutery, stiff and soft drinks, cooking international food, desserts and one of my major abilities are leadership qualities. It would be very challenging for me to work in an English speaking country because I have just graduated from the advanced level in English speaking and I would like to improve my oral skills fluently.

My interest include salad bars, kidney pies, flavoury stew and tasty desserts. I have worked at an international resort since I was doing my English course , as the head waitress in charge of running the whole restuarant in there.

I am very flexible, tolerant and easy going to form part of a team. Herewith I enclose a reference letter from my previous employer and I would be able to work at Coastal Campsites from now on. By the way, how many hours do I have to work? and how long is the contract for?

As I meet the qualifications I look forward to receiving a promt reply.

Best Regards,

katia carrasco

Laura Gallo was born in "Chuquicamata"(a city up north Santiago) in the tear 1914 and died in September, year 2005 in Santiago.

She had 7 sisters besides her. Unfortunately they all had just passed away before Laura´s death. Laura had been a hard working woman since her early teens. She worked for a mining company and her duty was to enclose the salary of the workers, at Chuquicamata open pite mine, in cash.

She got married to Juan Orrego, a lovely man. When her 2 older daughters were grown up, they decided to move to another city(Concepcion) so as to find a better educational opportunity for both of them.

Then, Juan Orrego retired from work, all the family moved to Santiago and once here he suffered a heart attack.....Therefore Laura became an atheist because she never forgot God for taking away her beloved husband.

Laura was not diabetic even though she ate a lot of sweeties. I used to spend my whole afternoons with her. She never took any medicine just did household medicines to relieve from any pain of the cancer illness she had been suffering before dying. She took the bad with the good of her illness. Now she is resting in peace under the shadow of an "Ibisco Tree "at the flowery countriside near Santiago.

opinion about "Angels and Demons"

I´am a person who believes in God deeply but I don´t follow the Catholic rites like going to Mass every Sunday.......This film is dense, it is an intense drama but it is very interesting to know a little more about Catholic religion.
"Angels and Demons" is not a great film but It is a good one. It moves at breakneck pace and heads up to intrigue and enlighten with a tangled plot set in an equally impermeable scene of Roman Catholic rite, laws and traditions.
The film itself shows the ultimate suspension of disbelief. On the other hand, It has an excellent photographic memory of what it is Roman Catholicism or Vatican operations. I liked seeing the film though it lasted two hours and a half.

Movie Review "Angels and Demons"

Langdon is called to Rome to investigate a plot to murder four Preferitti, priests under consideration to replace the recently deceased Pope. A scientist has been murdered in a secure facility in Geneva, where anti-matter is pruduced, his chest is branded with a symbol of the Illuminati, a mysterious catholic splinter group that murdered its way to power and was driven underground 400 years earlier. A tiny amount of highly volatile substance is missing, enough to destroy a city like the Vatican. The good guys have just 24 hours to stop them and save the priests......and save the faith....

Langdon is joined by a colleague of the murdered scientist played by Azelet Zurer. She had a hand in developing anti-matter and knows its power to destroy.

Langdon (the main character) is also befriended by a young priest (Ewan Mcgregor), a Vatican favourite, one of the few to venture into the modern technological world.

"The computer has greatly improved our lives today"

Communication is essentially a need for cooperation. They rather promote a life-style, which adds value to individual life of all, the business life and the society as a whole.

Computer-Mediated Communication is defined as any communicative transaction which occurs through the use of two or more networked computers.

The internet is the interconnection of computers around the world. It allows users of these computers to communicate in a variety of ways: through email, streaming conferencing, website information, file sharing, and others....

On the one hand, the computer has become a basic tool in our work at the office, in our houses and in everywhere because we can carry a laptop with us and log in through wireless technology wherever we feel like and at any time of the day. Besides this connecting and communicating through the internet can be one of the most effective and simple ways to use technology in the classroom. Thus, It can be extremelly motivating to students and offer opportunities for students to be involved in productive learning experiences.

On the other hand, connecting and communicating through the internet can be a frustrating and unrewarding experience for both the teacher and students if there is a lack of understanding and organization regarding the expectations of the experience. Secondly, the frustration may stem from a lack of technical support or perhaps a lack of understanding in regards to using email programs or even dissapointment in the process of the email exchange. Finally, one factor that is common between a successful an unsuccessful communication attempt on the Internet is the fact that teachers understand that it is an important skill for students to acquire.

Concluding, we decide how to use a computer. We should select more and less important information to use the computer as a tool which has to be mastered and controlled by the human beings.

Dear Mark,
Thanks a lot for the letter you sent to me 5 days ago, in which you greet me about the new house where I ' am living now. You know that I have been very busy tyding and cleaning up this old house I moved in, so I haven' t had enough time to write you before.

Tom Jones Lyrics "KISS"

"Kiss"

You don't have to be beautiful

To turn me on

I just need your body, baby

From dusk till dawn

You don't need experience

To turn me out

You just leave it all up to me

I'll show you what it's all about

You don't have to be rich to be my girl

You don't have to be cool to rule my world

Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with

I just want your extra time and your KISS

You got to not talk dirty, baby

If you wanna impress me

You can't be too flirty, mama

I know how to undress me

I want to be your fantasy

Maybe, you could be mine

You just leave it all up to me

We could have a real good time

You don't have to be rich to be my girl

You don't have to be cool to rule my world

Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with

I just want your extra time and your KISS

I think I'd better dance now.....

Women, not girls, rule my world

I said they rule my world

Act your age woman, not your shoe size

Maybe we could do the twirl?

You don't have to watch Dynasty

To have an attitude

You just leave it all up to me

My love will be your food

You don't have to be rich to be my girl

You don't have to be cool to rule my world

Ain't no particular sign, I'm more compatible with,

I just want your extra time and your KISS
This song named "kiss" makes me feel about "true love". I mean the kind of love you can feel from the bottom of your heart and soul, and It makes me think that a true love relationship can last for ever for... If I take into account the lyrics of this song.
The singer reminds me of soulmate love and that I don`t need extra attributes to be loved... or to attract a man.... You know what I mean... It is true love for me....

I work and study at the same time.... but my work has nothing to do with my proffesional career because It is related to Beauty.....I had been travelling quite a lot since I was 23 years old up to a grown up lady and during my stay in Europe I realized It was very important to learn a hand made activity to earn enough money as to survive anywhere in the world, so I studied it...................................
